To end hunger, it’s going to take getting our entire community involved. That means engaging our co-workers, our family, and our friends. So what better way to engage our friends than Facebook.
For several years, the team at Facebook has been volunteering at our warehouse and donating through employee giving. But this year they’ve stepped it up in a big way.
Just before the COVID-19 crisis began, Food Lifeline was working on a very ambitious food donation plan where Facebook would donate its surplus food from both of its campuses. Once a week, a food bank partner was set to pick up these donations and see that the food made it to the thousands of families facing food insecurity.
Then the pandemic shut everyone down. But Facebook had another idea. One that would create a million meals.
Facebook is famous for providing daily meals to their staff. With its campus mostly shut down, there was no need to prepare food for its teams. So instead, they passed the meals to Food Lifeline.
Over the past several months, Facebook has donated $200,000 to Food Lifeline. All money they would have spent feeding its staff is now going to help those that need it most.
“At Facebook, our mission is to bring the world closer together, and what better way to do that than food?”, says Stephen Uy, Head of Public Policy and Community Engagement Northwest.
“We’re honored to partner with Food Lifeline as they work to ensure access to food remains a human right. We’re all in this together.”
And when this is all over, Facebook will re-start the donation program that they began working on before the pandemic, creating meals where there would have been waste.
“We are looking forward to Facebook’s donation program”, says, Sandra Largaespada, Manager for Food Lifeline’s Grocery Rescue program.
“They purchase high quality, nutritious food for its teams, and now that surplus will create meals for so many people.”
For this, and all of the amazing gifts its made over the years, we are proud to honor Facebook with our Corporate Donor of the Month Award for September!
