A group of Seattle Chefs is making sure that no one goes hungry. And not just the paying customers.
For Celebrity Chef Tom Douglas, hunger is as close as the front door of his legendary Dahlia Lounge.
“I’ve been working downtown for 37 years, and I see people every day that don’t have a family to go home to, that don’t have a warm meal to go home to, and we can change that.”
For more than 30 years, Douglas has been working with Food Lifeline, a hunger relief group that feeds more than 700,000 people every year.
“Food Lifeline is a solution to ending hunger. They rescue food that would otherwise go to waste and deliver it to 275 food banks shelters and meal programs across Western Washington. It just works.”
His latest partnership with Food Lifeline is The Inside Dish, a new food blog that features chef interviews, recipes, kitchen tricks, and lots of “inside info” that will make a foodie drool.
The roster of chefs contributing the The Inside Dish reads like a who’s who of Seattle dining. From Douglas, to “The Chef in the Hat” Thierry Rautureau, to Chef John Howie of John Howie Steakhouse, and Jason Wilson of Miller’s Guild, each of these chefs will be contributing to The Inside Dish every month.
For Chef John Howie, helping feed hungry people is a responsibility that comes with his chosen profession.
“I see people out there that have to make choices about whether to pay the utilities or buy food for their children. Those are tough choices, and I want to be a part of that solution.”
Chef Jason Wilson has been working with Food Lifeline for several years. He says his work helping to feed the hungry, is just as important as happy customers in his restaurant.
“I’m really proud of the work we do with Food Lifeline, what we give, and what we bring to the table as well.”
If you ask Thierry Rautureau why people continue to go hungry, he gets a puzzled look on his face.
“It’s unfathomable that we have hungry people. This needs to change, and we can change it.”
To kick off the first edition of The Inside Dish, Food Lifeline is giving away tickets to, what else, a Food show. Everyone that signs up for the blog this week can enter to win one of two pairs of tickets to see Anthony Bourdain at the Paramount Theatre on November 13.
