Land Acknowledgement
The South Park community, where the Food Lifeline warehouse stands, is on the traditional land of the Duwamish Tribe, land that was forcibly taken through colonization, causing significant displacement and disruption to their way of life. The Duwamish Tribe has deep connections to local food: As the first people of this area, the tribe fished, foraged, and cultivated crops near the Duwamish River. As we continue our movement to feed our neighbors facing hunger and end hunger, we acknowledge, with gratitude, their enduring care for our land and waterways. Food Lifeline is committed to supporting the Duwamish Tribe with a monthly rent contribution.

This land acknowledgement is a brief introduction to the context that we live in as an organization. We are growing in our connection and impact to our regional community, Indigenous people, and the land we use. As such, we recognize that a land acknowledgement isn’t enough. We are actively increasing our capacity as an organization to make a meaningful mission-based impact in our highest impacted communities, which is inclusive of Indigenous communities and Indigenous people.
As we gather on the unceded territory of the Duwamish Tribe, we pledge to actively engage with local Indigenous communities to learn about their histories and current needs, and to support their efforts towards self-determination
