Federal Response
On July 1 the U.S. Senate voted 51-50 to severely cut SNAP and Medicaid through its version of the budget bill. 900,000 Washingtonians could lose nutritional assistance.
The biggest cut to nutritional assistance in history, preliminary estimates show the Senate version cuts nearly $200 billion from SNAP—or 20%. The scale of these changes cannot be overstated–across the U.S., it would result in more than 2 million children losing some or all of their SNAP benefits and take away health care access through Medicaid from nearly 11 million people.
The House will now quickly proceed with a vote on the bill expected before July 4; no further amendments are expected. We have a very limited window to influence the final outcome of this legislation.
