What actions would you take as a state legislator to protect and strengthen Washington’s food security safety net, including both public nutrition programs and the food banks and food pantries serving communities across the state?

Food banks are facing increased need throughout our state, now more than ever. We must continue to fund and expand nutrition programs and food banks while exploring new opportunities for outreach to ensure that everyone who needs these vital resources can access them. By strengthening our food security programs and connecting more people with available assistance, we can help ensure that no one in our state goes without the nutritious food they need.

What have you done to understand food insecurity in the communities you seek to represent—including engaging with people experiencing hunger or local hunger-relief organizations—and what policies would you prioritize to address the root causes of hunger and ensure Washington residents can afford and access the food they need?

I believe the issue of hunger is deeply intertwined with many of the other issues I am already working on, including housing and affordability. Since serving in public office, I have volunteered with and toured multiple organizations supporting Washingtonians facing food and housing insecurity. These experiences have reinforced for me how closely these challenges are connected.At the root of the issue is affordability. For too many families, the cost of food has made it increasingly difficult to afford nutritious, high-quality meals.

What policies or investments would you support to strengthen Washington’s food system, increase access to locally produced food, support Washington farmers and producers, and reduce food waste?

I support policies that invest in our food system, increase access to locally produced foods, and decrease food waste. These are common-sense, low-cost policies that can lead to a better environment, more affordable food, and increased access to nutritious, locally produced food for our families. It’s time for our state to invest in our locally produced food products and ensure they are accessible to every Washingtonian.
