What actions would you take as a state legislator to protect and strengthen Washington’s food security safety net, including both public nutrition programs and the food banks and food pantries serving communities across the state?

First of all, I would oppose any proposed cuts to these life saving programs. Further, I work with non profits to find out what they need to ensure they can continue to serve our communities and expand as needed. There is potential to  work with major food suppliers as well as organizations like the Farm to School Network. Working directly with organizations like yours will enable me to make decisions that further our goals.

What have you done to understand food insecurity in the communities you seek to represent—including engaging with people experiencing hunger or local hunger-relief organizations—and what policies would you prioritize to address the root causes of hunger and ensure Washington residents can afford and access the food they need?

I have volunteered at the North Clark County Food Bank and spoken directly to those in need. My experience is helpful but I would rely on those with more experience to help me implement needed public policy. Food insecurity is not my expertise and I want to hear from those who work in it daily so that I can make an informed difference.

What policies or investments would you support to strengthen Washington’s food system, increase access to locally produced food, support Washington farmers and producers, and reduce food waste?

Again, I would look to organizations like yours for solutions that need to be formalized in public policy to ensure we are truly meeting the needs of those most affected.
