Halloween Hunger Hero

For kids, Halloween is right up there with Christmas. Sacks of free candy just for taking a walk through the neighborhood.  What could be better? For the answer to that, just ask Seattle sixth-grader Jackson Huntington.

This year, Jackson had a request for his parents. One that was unusual for any kid with a sweet tooth.

“Because we always get more Halloween candy than we can eat”, said the 12-year-old, “I was thinking I might ask for food instead, and give it to the food bank.”

Inside Dish is Helping Feed the Hungry

A group of Seattle Chefs is making sure that no one goes hungry. And not just the paying customers.

For Celebrity Chef Tom Douglas, hunger is as close as the front door of his legendary Dahlia Lounge.

Tom Douglas“I’ve been working downtown for 37 years, and I see people every day that don’t have a family to go home to, that don’t have a warm meal to go home to, and we can change that.”

Northwest Farmers Fighting Hunger

Summer is the best time of year in the Northwest… unless you’re a hungry kid.

Every year, 230,000 students in Western Washington get free or reduced meals during the school year, in the summer, 89% of these kids don’t have any access to these meals. That means that 9 out of 10 kids have to fend for themselves.

You can help us make a difference for a hungry child by joining Northwest farmers, Fred Meyer and QFC to collect food and funds throughout June Dairy Month. Thanks to Washington's dairy farmers, Fred Meyer, and QFC for their support.

Kids Take A Star Turn To Help Kids

When it comes to caring about hungry people, you can't beat the passion of a child. They don't understand why everyone doesn't have enough to eat. They can't imagine getting ready for school and not having that first meal to send them on their way. Or swapping luches at noontime. Or the joy of sitting down with their family to enjoy a home-cooked meal, along with the smiles and laughter of their families.

This month, two of our favorite children stepped up to help feed thiose in need this coming summer.

Can't See The Desert For The Trees

When you hear the term “food desert”, you might think of the dense inner city neighborhoods of New York, Chicago, or Detroit. But the problem is closer to home than you think. Believe it or not, Renton is considered a “food desert”.

A food desert is an urban area that combines low-income residents, with poor access to fresh food. (more than a mile) The USDA measures these variables and maps out the trouble spots.

Seahawk Fans Create Thousands of Meals

Local hunger champions, Chef John Howie and former Seahawk Craig Terrill, rallied generous 12s throughout the NFL season to raise $88,693 for Food Lifeline.

The substantial effort earned the Seattle Seahawks team captains a second place finish in the Kick Hunger Challenge, which generated an additional $5,000 prize from the Taste of the NFL to increase the total Food Lifeline donation to $93,693.

Kick Hunger Challenge Update

Help our Seattle Seahawks and Chef John Howie bring the Kick Hunger Challenge trophy home to Seattle. A nationwide competition between NFL teams, the Kick Hunger Challenge runs all season long and helps football fans turn their passion into food for those in need.

Chef John Howie and former player and “Singing Seahawk” Craig Terrill are the three-time defending champions of the Taste of the NFL Kick Hunger Challenge. Let's help them bring home a fourth trophy.

Hunger and Health Kickoff

A very special group of healthcare professionals met recently to begin what will be an important piece of work – solving issues at the critical Intersection of Hunger and Health. What we know now is that more meals means better health which means better outcomes. This group will be working to find strategic actions that grow a healthier community.

Cambia Grove hosted the panel discussion, and was led by our board members Chris Blanton of BridgeSpan, Suzanne Daly of Providence, Food Lifeline’s CEO Linda Nageotte, and Dr. Fathi, CEO of Coordinated Care.
