Seahawk Fans Create Thousands of Meals
Local hunger champions, Chef John Howie and former Seahawk Craig Terrill, rallied generous 12s throughout the NFL season to raise $88,693 for Food Lifeline.
The substantial effort earned the Seattle Seahawks team captains a second place finish in the Kick Hunger Challenge, which generated an additional $5,000 prize from the Taste of the NFL to increase the total Food Lifeline donation to $93,693.
The Kick Hunger Challenge is a friendly fundraising competition between all 32 NFL teams to raise money for food banks nationwide. Chef Howie, Terrill and the Seattle Seahawks won the Kick Hunger Challenge the previous three seasons, but the New England Patriots team, who raised $134,000, was named this year’s winner at the 25th annual Party with a Purpose hosted by the Taste of the NFL during Super Bowl 50 festivities in San Francisco.
“We are proud to partner with the Seattle Seahawks to provide for those in need in our community. We congratulate The New England Patriots KHC team on their win; they have been right behind us the past three years and we look forward to competing with them again next year,” commented Chef John Howie. “The true winners are the hungry here in Seattle, across the country in Boston and in every NFL city in between. If we work together, hunger doesn’t have to happen!”
Chef Howie has been actively involved over the last 12 years with The Taste of the NFL and the Kick Hunger Challenge, raising a total of $525,000 for Food Lifeline in that time. For every $1 donated, Food Lifeline is able to provide five nutritious meals to hungry people in Western Washington. Because of generous local fan support during this season’s Kick Hunger Challenge, Food Lifeline will provide an additional 468,465 meals across Western Washington.
“We’d like to offer a big heartfelt thank you to Chef John, Craig and all the 12’s who stepped up to make the 2016 Kick Hunger Challenge a huge success!” commented Linda Nageotte, Food Lifeline President & CEO.
“The money raised this year will create more than 450,000 meals for hungry families here in Western Washington. Thank you, and go Hawks!”
