Historic Milestone: Statewide Food Security Strategy Bill Passes House on Hunger Action Day

We joined hunger advocates from across the state February 10 for Hunger Action Day in Olympia.

It proved to be an eventful day. We were there to see the Statewide Food Security Strategy Bill (HB 2238) get voted off the House floor – and to snap a celebratory selfie afterwards with the bill’s sponsor, Rep. Reeves. This bill creates a comprehensive statewide food strategy, supporting farmers who feed us, driving down the cost of groceries, and bringing locally grown food to our food banks, schools, and meal programs. The bill is scheduled for public hearing in the Senate Committee on Ways & Means at 1:30 PM on Friday, February 27.

Watch the Video Recap:

Throughout the day, we spoke with our representatives on the importance of SNAP, and pressed for bills currently being considered that strengthen food security. We were inspired to be in community with so many people and organizations doing amazing work to advance food security. And, we were able to join the Rally for the Millionaire’s Tax, which would help fix our regressive tax system and build a more equitable future for our communities.

We’re grateful to everyone who organized, participated, and supported this important day. Advocacy is one of the most impactful ways we can reduce hunger, and there were over 200 participants this year! We are honored to be doing this work alongside all of you.
