Sandra Stephens – Senate Candidate for LD 46 (Northgate, Green Lake, Ravenna)
What actions would you take as a state legislator to protect and strengthen Washington’s food security safety net, including both public nutrition programs and the food banks and food pantries serving communities across the state?
Food safety is a major concern for Seattle. Nothing less than the highest standard in Nutritional Organically grown food is acceptable for Seattle families to serve at the kitchen table. And nothing less is ok for our local stores, food banks, restaurants and schools. In order for children to learn, they need to feel safe and happy.
What have you done to understand food insecurity in the communities you seek to represent—including engaging with people experiencing hunger or local hunger-relief organizations—and what policies would you prioritize to address the root causes of hunger and ensure Washington residents can afford and access the food they need?
Watching moms and friends preparing Sunday dinner, smelling the delicious smells; baked pies from home & sitting with anyone who wanted to eat and enjoy the company continues to this day all around North Seattle. Donating and holding food drives were a part of Girl Scouts and the Salvation Army kitchens: it’s fun! Salad lunch ladle’s Bible Studies/prayer fellowship, bless your day as you pack lunch boxes for children in neighborhood schools. Many large and small local farming businesses donate portions to charity.
What policies or investments would you support to strengthen Washington’s food system, increase access to locally produced food, support Washington farmers and producers, and reduce food waste?
Looking local instead of cheap imported food is the best investment. No food from China can be allowed in our children’s schools. Let’s look at the benefits in preventing illness.
