What actions would you take as a state legislator to protect and strengthen Washington’s food security safety net, including both public nutrition programs and the food banks and food pantries serving communities across the state?

I would advocate for small farms that grow for (and in) their local community. In addition, I would double the value of food vouchers when used/redeemed at a local farmstead or farmer’s market. This gets wholesome food to families AND supports local growers.

What have you done to understand food insecurity in the communities you seek to represent—including engaging with people experiencing hunger or local hunger-relief organizations—and what policies would you prioritize to address the root causes of hunger and ensure Washington residents can afford and access the food they need?

On and off, I have grown in local community gardens for roughly 20 years. Today I am the manager of a local community garden that donates thousands of pounds of fruit to the food bank.

What policies or investments would you support to strengthen Washington’s food system, increase access to locally produced food, support Washington farmers and producers, and reduce food waste?

Please reference the food voucher adjustment mentioned earlier.  As to wasted food, it is vital that those needing food support learn how to utilize unfamiliar vegetables in the kitchen. I would fund a program similar to Veggie Chop Shop – www.wuwm.com/milwaukees-veggie-chop-shop-uses-farmers-excess-produce-to-feed-those-in-need – where chefs are employed to teach classes – and feed – those facing food insecurity.
