SNAP Cut Updates!
Earlier this spring, we shared concerns about the proposed federal budget cuts to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) – the nation’s largest anti-hunger program. At the time, we were bracing for a potential 21% reduction in SNAP funding.
What’s New Since Our Last Post
Since our original blog, the newly passed federal budget calls for at least $200 billion in SNAP cuts nationally. These changes would significantly restrict eligibility, reduce benefits, and shift costs onto already-strained state governments – including here in Washington.
- Washington state could lose $25 million per month (or more) in SNAP funding.
- 1,000,000 Washington residents who use SNAP will lose some benefits.
- The average daily benefit could drop to just $4.18 per person – barely enough for a single meal.
- New work requirements will restrict SNAP eligibility for
- Parents and caregivers
- Veterans
- People experiencing homelessness
- Legally residing immigrants
- Adults up to 65 years old who are not employed full-time year-round
- Washington state could be forced to absorb $432 million annually in new administrative and food costs – dollars not currently allocated in the state budget.
How You Can Help
We must act to protect SNAP. Contact your representative and ask them to continue to protect food security for everyone. Tell them what SNAP means for you and your family.
