The latest federal budget bill cuts $200 billion in funding for the SNAP program, which could mean a loss of $500 million here in Washington over the next ten years.

One million people in our state rely on SNAP to nourish themselves and their families. In addition to funding cuts, new work requirements could leave as many as 130,000 of our neighbors with lost or reduced benefits.

A long-time supporter of hunger relief work, Shrier says there may be ways to rescue SNAP dollars.

“We’re going to be brainstorming about what we can do, what bills I could bring up, perhaps working with some Republican colleagues on workarounds. We must come together and find a way to fix this.”

With less federal support, people experiencing food insecurity will now have to rely on food banks to bridge the gap. But food banks are already overwhelmed across Western Washington. The number of people visiting food banks has now hit 1.8 million.
