How to Advocate For Change

Advocacy doesn’t require a degree in political science–it just requires your voice. When it comes to fighting for issues like hunger, poverty or access to nutritious food, one of the most powerful tools you have is your personal story. Lawmakers want to hear from the people their decisions affect. That’s where you come in.

If you’re not sure where to start, we’ve made it simple. Think of your story as a five-finger guide:

  1. Introduce Yourself – Start with your name, where you live, and let them know you’re a constituent.
  2. State the Issue – Clearly explain what issue or bill you’re there to talk about.
  3. Share Why You Care – This is your moment. Speak from the heart and share why this issue personally matters to you.
  4. Why the Legislator Should Care – Let the legislator know how this issue affects your community or state in large.
  5. Make the Ask – End strong by asking for their support. Be specific ” Can we count on you to support Bill #1234?”

Remember: Your story is powerful because it’s yours. You don’t need to be an expert to make an impact–you just need to show up, speak up and ask for change.
