Climate Commitment Act Brings Additional Weekly Produce Deliveries to Food Lifeline Network
Food Lifeline is receiving 6 additional semi-truckloads of fresh produce every week, thanks to the Climate Commitment Act.
Food Lifeline strongly advocated for protecting the Climate Commitment Act, which was funded by the Washington State Legislature. This bill was designed in part to lower greenhouse emissions by moving nutritious foods that may have gone to waste to Washington food bank systems as donations.
Feeding the NW, a produce co-op within the Feeding WA organization, will deliver 1.8 million pounds of fresh produce per week to Food Lifeline, Oregon Food Bank, and Second Harvest.
As a result, Food Lifeline will receive six semi-truck loads of fresh produce per week including pears, apples, onions, carrots, and potatoes. These produce deliveries will continue every month from now through June, 2025, and will be available to the Food Lifeline partner network in 17 Western Washington counties.
Food Lifeline is grateful for the partnership with WSDA for making this legislation possible, and supporting the network of food banks serving Western Washington. The Climate Commitment Act is a great example of how advocating for policy changes can limit the environmental damage of food waste and nourish communities.
