The Arlington Mobile Market is Helping Where it Counts
Residents at the Vintage Apartments are big fans of the Mobile Market.
“The prices at the grocery store are really out of sight,” says resident Beverly Angerbauer. “We are on a very limited income so for us it’s been a real blessing.”
The Mobile Market is a 30-foot grocery truck operated by the Arlington Food Bank. The design, is ingenious. The entire side of the truck opens up like an awning, revealing rows of fresh produce, canned goods, and frozen meats. This “grocery store on wheels” is a critical resource for those with limited access to fresh, nutritious food.
“Growing up, the bookmobile was a beacon of hope and resources in my rural community,” says Executive Director, Carla Rankin. “Inspired by that experience, we created the Mobile Market.”
The truck makes fifteen stops every month, serving 1,000 households and providing nearly 30,000 meals to those who have a hard time getting to a traditional grocery store.
“The Mobile Market is a lifeline for many in our community, especially those living in rural areas,” says Rankin. “By bringing farm-fresh produce, dairy, pantry staples and meats directly to our guests, we ensure that everyone, regardless of their location, has the opportunity to lead a healthier life.”
And residents, couldn’t be happier.
“I love it because they come to us,” says resident Patti Nelson. “So many people that live here don’t have vehicles, so getting groceries can be an issue. So, when a wonderful food bank comes here twice a month, and we can just walk out here and get groceries, it’s a wonderful thing.”
When the Mobile Market pulls up here, it’s not only a source of healthy and nutritious food, it’s a chance for residents to catch up with their neighbors.
“It means a lot for me. And there’s a nice social aspect to it,” says resident Derek Dent. “I get to see people I don’t normally run into. That’s really nice.”
Listening to the voices of those facing food insecurity, and understanding the challenges they face, is critical to ending hunger. Food Lifeline salutes the Arlington Food Bank, the Mobile Market, and the team of staff and volunteers that makes their work possible.
