Community Justice Alliance

The mission of the Community Justice Alliance is to empower individuals and communities to reclaim control over their food systems by promoting sustainable, culturally relevant, and equitable food practices. We aim to support local food producers, increase access to nutritious food, and ensure that everyone has the resources and knowledge needed to grow, share, and consume food in ways that honor both the environment and their unique cultural heritage.

Our vision is to cultivate a future where individuals and communities thrive through food sovereignty, with full access to locally produced, sustainable, and culturally meaningful food. In this future, food systems are just, environmentally regenerative, and rooted in community decision-making, providing health, resilience, and food security for all.

How we define our issues

  • Individual Food Sovereignty: The right of individuals to access, produce, and control their own food sources in a sustainable and culturally appropriate way, free from external pressures or dependence on industrial food systems.
  • Community Food Sovereignty: The collective right of a community to control its food systems, including the production, distribution, and consumption of food, in a manner that reflects local needs, cultural values, and ecological sustainability.

Path of Pursuit: This is how we move forward, and get the work done to achieve our goals.

Core Beliefs

Land Access as Power
Access to land is critical for communities to build sustainable food systems and reclaim control over resources.
Food Sovereignty = Collective Power
True sovereignty comes from communities organizing for control over food production, distribution, and policy.
Independent, Community-Based Food Systems
We want to cultivate a future where food systems are local, resilient, and managed by the people they serve.
Building Resilience Beyond Charity
Moving beyond food banks to systems where communities create their own food security.
Policy as a Tool for Liberation
Shifting policies to support local farmers, community gardens, and equitable land access for all.
Centering Lived Experience
Solutions are shaped by those most affected, empowering communities to drive change from within.
Anti-Displacement and Food Security
Protecting local land and resisting gentrification ensures food stays accessible to all.
Healing Through Community Control
Independent food systems help communities heal by reconnecting people with the land and their traditions.

Storytelling Matters.

Storytelling is a powerful advocacy tool because it humanizes issues and creates empathy. When people hear a personal story, they can connect emotionally with the experience of others, making abstract policy discussions more concrete and relatable. Storytelling also helps to amplify the voices of those directly impacted by social issues, ensuring their experiences are at the forefront of advocacy efforts.
