Solving the Problem of Wasted Food

It happens every day. The curry special at your favorite cafe wasn’t a big seller. A crop of apples didn’t catch customer’s

eyes at your local grocery store. That bag of spinach in your neighbor’s crisper wilted and ended up in the trash. These things really add up over time — every year, about 40 percent of food in the United States goes to waste.

When you support Food Lifeline, you’re part of the solution to this serious problem. The amount of food that ends up in landfills is enough to provide about 17 meals per person in our country every month. Your gifts help rescue perfectly good food from retailers, restaurants, farmers, and manufacturers and redirect it to the people in Western Washington who need it most.

Food rescue doesn’t just contribute to hunger relief — it also helps protect the environment by limiting methane emissions that come from landfills.
